Prof. Markus Heinrich‘s group from University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany, made significant achievement on one-step synthesis of tricyclic benzopyranopyridinones as OLED materials, and published their work on The Journal of Organic Chemistry.

The synthesis of tricyclic benzopyranopyridinones, which are widely used as ligands in OLED materials, was achieved for the first time in a single reaction step starting from 3-hydroxypyridine and ortho-carboxylic ester substituted phenyldiazonium salts. The titanium(III)-mediated radical arylation of 3-hydroxypyridines with diazonium salts was thereby found to proceed with high regioselectivity for the 2-position. In addition, this arylation strategy offers a straightforward access to 3-hydroxy-2-phenylpyridines, which are useful compounds in the field of medicinal chemistry.
